It’s that time of year again, when many of us are trying to get back into a fitness routine. Now that we’re past January, hopefully you’re still going strong. If not, here are some apps to help get you back on track, and keep you there!
Nike+ Running (Free) iOS
This app is a great companion for runners everywhere. Using GPS, it tracks distance, calories burned, and an average pace. Beyond this, you can customize run reminders to keep you on track. My favorite part of this app is adding what Nike calls a PowerSong, a track from your music library that gives you a boost just when you need a little motivation to keep going.
P90X ($0.99) iOS
I am a complete sucker for infomercials. No matter how cheesy, they always seem to sell me on the usefulness of their products. P90X is a famous workout program that trains the body through intense workouts and is now available in app form. (Because really, who wants to order a bunch of DVDs?) The app itself costs $0.99 which sounds like quite a steal in comparison to the usual price of the workout program, however be warned the only parts included with the app for free are the Fit Test and the Ab Ribber X workout. Each individual workout costs $6.99 each (you can buy them all for $59.99). Sounds pretty pricey, but I still give it my vote for the convenience of having the workouts in app form, and it’s still less than a gym membership!
Jillian Michaels (Free) iOS/Android
Jillian Michaels is the tough as nails trainer for the popular reality show The Biggest Loser. While I can’t promise she’ll motivationally yell at you from the app, it does have a wonderfully easy-to-use layout. The initial setup of the app asks for information to personalize your workout—how much weight you want to lose, problem areas, and how often you exercise. The workout is then customized to your own fitness needs. I like this approach, because it’s personalized to your fitness goals and you won’t over-do it.
Fitness Buddy Lite (Free) iOS/Android
Too bad all lite apps aren’t this comprehensive. This free app features over 300+ exercises with easy-to-follow instructions for each. Each one can be found alphabetically or by muscle group. It’s like a workout directory. For $0.99 you can upgrade to over 1700 exercises, as well as more than 1000 HD videos and body metric tracking.
Workout Trainer (Free) iOS/Android
Like the Jillian Michaels app, Workout Trainer is customizable, and great for beginners. The app talks you through each exercise alongside a virtual trainer. What I love about this app is that you can access your music directly from the app, and each workout is timed. Tough exercise is a little easier to muscle through when you know you only have 15 seconds left to endure.
